Recording notes: I got this from a friend of the taper shortly after the show. I may have made a few analog copies in the 90’s, but that’s about it. This is the first time I’ve transferred this show to a digital format. The taper did a nice job except that there is some microphone jostling from time-to-time, mostly between songs. The first few seconds of Supplication Jam are missing due to the tape flip. There is also about 10 seconds of distortion at the beginning of Supplication Jam due to the age of the tape.

No EQ or additional sound editing has been applied, this is the raw recording. Samples will be posted. A print advertisement clipping scan and ticket stub scan are included. Many thanks to the taper.

Show Notes: This is the complete Bobby & the Midnites portion of the show. There was an opening band, but I can’t recall their name. It definitely was not NRPS, who opened some other Bobby & The Midnites shows that year. As I recall, the crowd at the Orpheum was particularly rowdy on this night, and bringing an opening band on stage was like tossing raw meat to a starving dog. Compounding the issue was the fact that the opener was a second rate blues band, and not very good. The leg kicks and theatrics merely incited the crowd. After the first song, there was basically chatter and a smattering of applause. During the next song, it degenerated to yelling and booing, to the point that by the third song (“Shotgun,” I think), the crowd’s jeering was louder than the band. In mid-song, to the chants of “Get off the stage, you suck!”, the band stopped playing, threw down their instruments, and enthusiastically flipped the audience the bird. They just walked off, having taken enough abuse. To this day, I’ve never seen a band booed off the stage like that. When Bobby & the Midnights took the stage, Bobby Cochran shouted to the audience (it’s not on this tape) “You people are crazy!” Prior to the encore, Weir references this in a comment to the crowd. Needless to say, this was a great show.

*The Story of The Dusty Box: About 5 years ago, I tossed or gave away all of my cassettes prior to moving. Before leaving about 1500 tapes at the curb for the garbage man (I literally couldn't give 'em away), I stashed about 2 dozen that I feared I might never find in digital form. That box of tapes mysteriously disappeared. On 1/15/2008, the box was found in my basement, covered in dust, hiding behind an old slide projector. There's more to come...
Even Flow
Spin the Black Circle
DISC TWO
Corduroy
Rearviewmirror
Black
Leash/Improv
I'm One
Baba O'Riley

notes: Ed joins The Frogs during their set: they start 'Jeremy' and Ed is lowered by a rope or
cable onto the stage like he's flying, wearing the gold bat wings. He picks up a microphone and
joins in. He also contributes to 'I Only Play for Money' and one other song, plus 'I'm One'
(just Ed and Dennis). Lively, fun performance with Ed very animated and venturing to the edge
of the stage to touch the audience as early as the second song. 'Go' is dedicated to Kurt Cobain
and 'Corduroy' is premiered. After assisting Dave on drums during 'Porch,' Ed gives one of the
band's tall, white candles to the crowd, saying he wants to see how far back it will make it.
To his enjoyment, the candle is passed to the back of the audience successfully while the band
plays a snippet of the Velvet Underground's 'Beginning to See the Light.' Three Who songs are
played tonight ('The Real Me', 'I'm One' and 'Baba O'Riley'). Cool show in a beautiful venue,
which Ed acknowledges twice.(THANKS to Five Horizons)

This is an old vinyl boot that I copied to cassette many years ago.
I gave the tape to a friend who transfered it to cdr with a Phillips stand alone
cd burner. EAC was used to normalize and add some light EQing. A very good recording all in all (There is some clicks and pops from the vinyl). None of these versions has been officially released to the best of my knowledge.

Stevie Wonder Circle Star Theater
San Carlos, Ca.

I pulled this down from DIME awhile back. My commendation to a PencilGeek (taper ?) real
nice recording and remastering job. I was surprised it was dead ever there. Not many
recordings came out of the Circle Star Theater.
Notes: Before anybody complains about the length of this description, I'll just say that I've waited 24 years before releasing an unbelievable concert into the wild, and spent over 300 hours mastering it so you all could enjoy. I figure that gives me the right to say as much as I want.

A friend called me up months before this concert and told me Stevie was playing up in San Francisco as a favor to Bill Graham. Stevie wasn't on tour, but he was playing five or six nights, two shows a night. So I got tickets very late, and was sitting near the back of the auditorium. I was seeing the late show on the last night -- the very last performance.

After the first song, Stevie talks for about 10 minutes. He says the concert got bad reviews in the press. So Stevie wanted to do something different this night. In addition to his normal songlist, Stevie sings Christmas songs, Jobim, James Brown, and other cover tunes of some of his favorite artists. These aren't just cover tunes, these are insanely hot Stevie Wonder covers of these songs. There are many surprises on this recording, including a 20-minute section of songs done in a Bossa-Nova style (including Silent Night, Girl From Ipanema, and his own Send One Your Love).

When he's done having fun, he performs his own hits all the way from 1961 to present. But after listening to this show for a few years, there was something that always really bugged me about it. Stevie wasn't on tour, yet, the band was the most over-rehearsed I had ever heard. Why would they be this over-rehearsed I wondered? The answer came two years later, when Showtime aired a special concert: "Stevie Wonder -- Coming Home To Detroit." This Detroit concert was recorded a few months after this concert, and it sounds like these shows were the rehearsals for the Showtime TV special.

As you listen to this show, pay close attention to the "oldies." Stevie plays these songs nearly identically to his original Motown recordings. In the many times I had seen Stevie before this show, he NEVER performed these songs in their original styles. This is why I concluded the band was so over- rehearsed, and why they were practicing for the Detroit TV taping -- Stevie's hometown, where he hadn't played in 20 years. Surely his hometown crowd would expect to hear these songs just as he had recorded them, so many years ago.

There are too many great things about this concert to describe -- everything from the sound quality -- to the song list -- but there are also serious problems. So instead of describing why it's so good, I'll spend the remainder of the time describing the problems I faced during the re-mastering and why it took 24 years to be released.

Levels & Equalization The recording levels were different on L/R channels. This is relatively easy to fix if you know you shouldn't blindly boost the volume on the lower channel on analog recordings -- as it would cause other problems. Even worse, the equalization between L/R channels was different -- causing the channels to sound completely different than each other. Making matters even worse, the equalization seemed to change for every song too. Thanks to modern technology, software now exists to fix this type of problem.

Drop-outs I've stared at sonogram images of this concert for over 300 hours during this restoration project. Due to it's age, there are probably hundreds of drop-outs in this recording -- but you'll only be able to hear a small handful of them.

Rowdy
Audience During As, the audience around me began to unravel. At the end of the concert, many people around me were trying so hard to get out of their seats and rush down to the stage, that they were literally climbing over anybody in their way. I was in their way and was knocked down twice. The recording during this 2-minute 23-second section is not salvageable. Therefore, I deleted this section, and created an alternate musical transition -- one that most people won't even notice. Enclosed in this release are two alternate versions of "As." "As (Backfill Cut)" and "As (Original Cut)" are the two alternate versions. The backfill cut fills in the 2:23 minute section of my recording with an alternate, and lesser quality recording of the same concert. The original cut is my recording, as is, and you can hear me getting knocked around a few times. When burning a CD, there are three separate CUE sheets that correspond to each of the versions of "As." Use which ever version suits you best, and burn with the CUE sheet provided.

Stolen Master The master tape of Volume-2 of this concert was stolen many years ago. The last 90 minutes of this show are taken from a 1st-Generation copy. I did my best to make this 1st-Generation copy sound as good as the original, but it still doesn't sound as good as the first 90 minutes. That's why the first 90 minutes is rated A- quality, and the last 90 minutes is rated B+ quality. Some of the songs on this section range from sounding 95% as good as the master, to only 75% as good. The varying quality presented a huge problem for me during the mastering process -- because my techniques literally had to change from song to song, and sometimes section to section within a song.

Tape Turns This was a long concert, and I didn't have the luxury of bringing more than two 90-minute tapes. I had to conserve tape space. As a result, there are some bad tape turns -- where a song is cut off. Here are the tape turn locations, and how I fixed them (sort of).

* Tape-1, Side-1: Tape ended in the middle of Creepin. By the time I turned the tape over, the song had changed styles. To fix this, I had to borrow a section of the song from an alternate recording of this same concert.
* Tape-1, Side-2: Turned the tape off as fast as I could after You Haven't Done Nothin' To fix this, I had to borrow a section of the song from an alternate recording of this same concert.

Audio quality The first 90 minutes is as near perfect as it can get. However, the second 90 minutes (the "stolen master") is far less than perfect. I had to make many, MANY compromises while mastering the second half of the show. Above all I favored music quality. During quiet sections, sometimes it wasn't possible to remove all of the hiss; so these sections may sound noisier than the rest of the tape. During two "talking" sections, the signal level was so low, and the noise was so high, that I had to revert to MONO just you could hear what was being said. These sections are VERY short; and as soon as the music begins, the noise goes away and the recording is back to full stereo.

I Finally ran out of tape This concert was 3+ hours long. The concert started around 10PM, and lasted until 2:30 AM. I didn't expect a 3+ hour concert, so I was unprepared. I ran out of tape during the very last song -- Happy Birthday -- about 30 second before the last note was played.

Special
Thanks I owe the following people thanks for their support and/or help with this project.

* Dave Philips - Dave provided the alternate source material that allowed me to back-fill the missing pieces from my show (the pieces to fill the gaps during the tape turns). Dave attended the same concert and also happened to record it.
* Musicians at this concert. A few of the musicians at this show know about this recording and already have copies. I've been friends with one of these musicians for many years now, and he's ecstatic about this re-mastering project.
* iZotope for support with their RX noise reduction product and giving pointers for noise-reducing the most difficult sections of this recording. Far better noise reduction software than any I've ever heard.
* My sister, and others at KVR Audio Forum for making suggestions for software techniques and purchases.
* My wife. Anybody who can tolerate her husband spending 300+ hours spanning over three months of working in front of a computer and staring at sonograms of a single concert -- certainly deserves thanks.

Recorded with digital cable from satellite to yamaha cdr-hd1500
I mixed two broadcasts to get the full show. 3 or 4 jingles were professionally deleted.
This show will be aired on wdr tv at Sunday night/Monday morning 4th/5th of August but I don't think they will air the full show. Also, wdr tv is broadcasting at 256 kbps, so see this show as an audio upgrade then (320 kbps)

Enjoy the show, cause this is music :-)
Led Zeppelin 1973-07-13 Cobo Hall, Detroit, MI, US [SBD] The Song of Detroit

Led Zeppelin
13 July 1973
Cobo Hall - Detroit, Michigan

Bootleg Title: The Song of Detroit
Bootleg Label: Celebration
Disc Number: SOBO 006

Stereo Soundboard Fragment

This show was requested by a fellow ZepHead.

Track List:
1. Moby Dick
2. Heartbreaker
3. Whole Lotta Love
4. Dancing Days

The Celebration release also contains Dazed and Confused and stairway
to Heaven, but they are not from this date. See the explanation below,
from Underground Uprising:

"A friend of mine thought that the 7/13/1973 "Song of Detroit" sounded a
bit too much like 5/26/1973 Salt Lake City 1973 (on Watch Tower) and I
confirmed the fact. The songs of issue are Dazed And Confused and Stairway
To Heaven. This was the extra material that made this a more complete
release than [previous releases]. Plant's comments between these two
tracks match. It appears that Celebration got away with this as I see that
bootledz lists it as a more complete show, and your site lists it as a
worthy upgrade. When you get a chance take a listen to both shows and if
you agree with my friend and I please note the issue on your website so
that people are aware." (Ben Bowen March 03)

In order to stop the spread of these incorrectly added tracks, I have
delteted them from this torrent. All tracks included here are known to be
from Detroit.

The stryder website ranks the sound quality of this show at 8.5, and I
must agree that it sounds great. Whole Lotta Love is nothing less than
amazing!

Torrent includes:
EAC Logfile
FLAC Fingerprints
Artwork (altered to make the tracklist accurate for this date)
20 seconds of that source have been used in 'You can't quit me, baby' because the orginal TV source was interupted by a Josh interview snappet.
TAPER:

NOTES:
Nice little session on a Saturday afternoon. Bummer was that I didn't cut out the commercial break on the original tape, and hence near the end of the last tune the tape ran out, resulting in a 5 second (or so) cut in the song as I had to
flip the tape. Over the course of the last year meant to call 102.1 & request them to play "Rusted Wheel" again to get a clean copy, but never got around to it. Now, just want to get this off my HD so it is presented as is. I edited the 2
parts as close to the cuts as possible in CD Wav, then edited them together w/Audacity. It is what it is.. Don't believe I've seen another source surface for this set either.

Crack a cold one, spark one up & enjoy. You received this lossless, let's keep it that way. Please don't encode to MP3 (unless for personal use) and circulate. I'd rather not see this sendspaced, megauploaded, etc all over the web
in numerous different formats. In 2008 do we still have to say don't sell this? To paraphrase Stripey Dave here on Dime: A real person took the time to record/encode/post & share this. If you enjoy the recording please
show some respect & do the very minimum you can, take the time to say those 2 little words: "thank you"
- the dude abides..
SMASHING PUMPKINS
January 25, 1997
New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum
New Haven, CT, USA

Source: unknown audience audio
Lineage: DAT (x) > CDR (x) > WAV [EAC Secure Mode] > FLAC [8]
Quality: 7.5/10

disc one:
1. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
2. The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right)
3. Jellybelly
4. Tonight, Tonight
5. Rhinoceros
6. banter
* MISSING* Muzzle

disc two:
1. Disarm
2. Thru the Eyes of Ruby
3. Spiders [tease]
7. Cherub Rock
8. Silverfuck > Space Jam
9. outro [PA Music]

Note: Incredible show. I'm not sure which source this is, having not heard the other two, but it is purported to be
from a DAT source, which I'm not sure I believe. "Muzzle" is missing, sadly. Last performance (for now) of "Jellybelly".
It sounds like the band was under some sort of curfew, as "Silverfuck" ends fairly abruptly, in comparison with other such
versions from this tour that meandered into an easier ending. Good stuff.
Recording Notes:
There is a touch of static in a few places which seem to be on all circulating copies. It may be from overloading on the microphone.

Show Notes (thanks to Five Horizons):
Ed joins The Frogs in a cover of The Who's 'See Me Feel Me' wearing an elaborate silver robe. The Empire Carpet song is an old, local carpet store jingle which Ed sings as evidence that he's really from Chicago. It is Jeff's birthday and the obligatory cake and food fight are evidenced after Stone leads the crowd in singing 'Happy Birthday,' with pieces of Jeff's birthday cake and candles tossed to the audience. Jeff is wearing Chicago Bulls #23 (Michael Jordan) basketball trunks. A fun night and show.
Elvis Presley 1970-02-23 International Hotel, Las Vegas, NV, US [SBD]

Elvis Presley
International Hotel
2/23/70
SBD

I was asked today if I had any good Elvis. I found this on my HD and it sounds pretty good. Thought I'd share it. Not sure where I got it, but thx to the original seeder.

This is a great sounding soundboard recording of the 23 February 1970 closing
show at the Las Vegas International Hotel. This CD was previously released as
"In Dreams Of Yesterday - live at the international vol. 2" but this is FAR
BETTER sound quality.

Technical note from the booklet: "This clasing closing show presents all tracks
in best-ever quality, as it comes directly from the original two reels,
carefully transferred to DAT. The first reel stops after "C.C. Rider", the
second begins with "Sweet Caroline". These 37-year old recordings are somewhat
rough, with noticable hiss here and there. Every effort was made to alleviate
this problem without affecting the original sound. We hope you enjoy the
results". The Madison record label.

Tracks:
01. All Shook Up
* Originally, on the DISC 01, the first 6 songs are part of "MTV Unplugged".

** "Draw The Line/F.I.N.E." was removed because this track belongs to "Woodstock 1994 Boxset" official recording.

- COMMENTS:
Excellent stereo of the infamous Woodstock 25 performance where co-headliners Aerosmith took the stage just before midnight.

I found this sitting in my "done" directory. Apparently I did this 6 weeks ago and it just sat there, lonely and pitiful, not speaking up for itself.

This came from the silver bottom boot "Dream". A good show and decent mix, maybe a little beefy at times and others it seems fine, the source was not consistent there (every once in a while 250hz jumps out on Jimmy's drums, hello!) but a very worthy and rockin' set.

My rating: Aud 4+

My comment: With a little less audience this would
be a super audio recording. Drum solos and ending on
Sunshine is excellent. I don't believe this show has had
much circulation.
